TIPS ON TRIMMING YOUR DOGS NAILS The easiest and most pleasant way to trim your dogs nails is with a
Dremel, a PediPaws or a Peticure Nail Trimmer. All of these grind or sand the nails to size and shape rather than the old clippers which crush and cut the
nail and can be very painful for your dog. All offer pain free pedicures for your dog.
Here are some tips on using them.
- Some dogs don't like the sound so get them use to it by running it before you start to do their nails. If your dog is afraid of the sound then try some treats so they will associate it with something good. Let your dog smell it, lick it and taste it.
- Use the lowest speed and keep the session time short.
- Just do a little of the nail at a time and move on to the next.
- Don't keep the sander on the nail longer than 1 or 2 seconds. Any longer and heat may build up and be uncomfortable for your dog.
- There are a number of attachments that come with a Dremel. Use the sand paper attachment, not the stone attachment. The stone attachment can build up heat quickly.
- If you have a long hair dog then hold the hair around the nails back so as to be sure not get their hair tangled up in the spinning sander.
All three come in a battery powered model and the Dremel also comes in an electric powered model. I use an electric Dremel and have had great results with it.
Of course you should read and follow the directions that come with whichever device you choose to use.
